So I have been super busy with the job and the pod cast that I have been neglecting my duties as the blog captain of this ship and I feel as if there is a lot of stuff to catch up on.

Officially, this is no longer the blog for the pod cast Fangirl Confessional, it has been moved to a brand new location which isn't that far of a reach, www.fangirlconfessional.blogspot.com!  Not to worry, I will still be on here and hopefully have more fun and interesting things to say but as of right now I am just giving you an update on the complicated web that is my life!  Not to leave anyone empty handed, here is a trailer for an awesome movie that everyone should check out: RED, way to go DC!  You did an amazing job with this one!

Fangirl Confessional is here!

We are giving you a little intro of the fabulous ladies staring on the Fan girl Confessional! 

Hey! So...to start off, my name is Tressa and I was born and raised in Lexington, KY. I didn't fully realize my true nerdy potential until I started dating my now husband. I collect everything from comic books to action figures and yes I admit...it's a weakness. With a background in theater/design and music I'm a true right brained thinker.
Most of my "down time" is dedicated to my art. I'm a portrait artist who specializes in pencils. I've done quite a bit of commission work that ranges from recreating old photos for family members to murals on people's walls with acrylics. I'm currently working on some t-shirt designs for my brother's new website, a web comic with my friend Jason (coming soon!) and my own pieces that I will be selling at the Baltimore comic con...awww yeah!
I'm wicked excited about the pod cast that we're starting and I'm going to be the official "Movie Guru". I guess I'm what you would call a movie buff...but there are still a ton that I apparently "need" to see. Still haven't seen the Rocky movies...so sue me. So, if I'm understanding it right, I'll be keeping you guys up to date on the latest flicks and dishing out all the vital info that you need to know about them!

My name is Kerry Anne. I'm an all-around nerd. TV shows, movies, anime, books, video games... I'm all about it. All of it. I spend most of my free time playing my xbox 360 or watching some sort of sci-fi something or another.
I live with my boyfriend of 2 years come October 2010 and our spoiled little tortoiseshell kitten, Ember.  I am going to be the "anime guru" so hopefully I will have all the latest info that you will be needing in that genre!  I will also be heading to Dragon Con in September so hopefully I will see you there!

My name is Jennifer and I am creator of the lovely blog Confessions of a Fan Girl!  I love all things Buffy and True Blood so if you are looking to suck up those are always good avenues to follow!  I also adore Sonny with a Chance and iCarly (yes I am 26 and those shows are geared towards children but I don't care one bit! :P)  As a friend of mine, Marissa, put it if I were Batman, my Bruce Wayne job would be a lowly customer service rep but my Batman job is writing a comic with an amazing artist, the lovely and talented Brandy, called Way Out.  I love to express myself through writing or singing.  Reading is also top on my list and I love Janet Evanovich, Katie MacCalister and Charlaine Harris.  Video games are a must for every day life whether its Arkham Asylum, Valkyria Chronicles or Pokemon!
2/3 of Fan girl Confessional (Tressa and myself) will be attending Baltimore Con and will be having a booth in artist alley!  As soon as we get our booth number we will post and you all can feel free to swing by and check out our stuff!  On the podcast I will be your "TV guru" and have all your questions television related!  We are super excited about this new adventure and can't wait to get it started!

Podcast time!!

As all things do (hopefully) it is time for this site to evolve!  I have found a few good ladies and we are going to be starting our own podcast talking about the things that are on our minds involving nerd news from girls point of views!

Our first recording is on Sunday and it will be basically and introduction session with our next one about the biggest thing to happen this summer...True Blood!!!  Woo hoo!  No one can resist True Blood and with funny women like us who could resist!  It will prove to be an exciting time and new territory for everybody so wish us luck.

Top 5 artistic anime of all time! by Birdiebo

Yay! Once again it's time for Fangirl's anime review!
This time around I asked good friend Birdiebo to do a top 5 artsy anime review.  She did an amazing job and if you aren't just impressed with her writing skills you can check out her website on blogspot or her deviant art page.  She is always down for monies so hit her up for a commission!

5. ‘Soul Eater’: Soul Eater is a fairly new anime that’s still being released.  It follows three teams of weapon wielding meisters who’s goal is to have their weapons defeat and absorb the souls of 99 evil humans and one witch.  If they do this in that order then the weapons will dramatically increase in power, making them Death Scythes.  Besides the really cool story, Soul Eater is eye candy to watch.  With it’s wacky designs (my faves are the Sun and Moon) and rapid action sequences you’ll be begging to watch the next episode…I know I can’t wait!!!

4. ‘Speed Grapher’: I really loved this anime so much that I would put it in my top five.  Of course it’s not for everyone, and I think that’s one of the reasons why Speed Grapher sticks out in my head.  It begins with Tatsumi Saiga, a photographer, that stumbles upon a secret fetish club and becomes entangled in the life of their 15 year old “Goddess”, Kagura.  I won’t give much more than that for I’m afraid it might ruin the fun of the show.  The character designs are pretty wicked for this anime and they do a really great job with conveying emotion through the animation.  Speed Grapher’s animation is right in sync with the feeling of the music as well.  If you want a truly different story and you can stand super creepy fetishes, then this is your show!

 

3. ‘Samurai 7’: This anime is based off of Akira Kurosawa’s highly regarded 1954 film ‘Seven Samurai’.  Every year in a village named Kanna bandits come and pillage all the rice from the yearly harvest.  The elder of the village finds samurai who are willing to protect and fight for their village.  ‘Samurai 7’ was one of the very first anime I have ever watched, and it holds a very special place in my heart.  It has a more realistic style of animation for it’s characters, not the typical giant eyed mode, and it’s fight scenes are well thought out and executed.  You’re not left thinking…”What just happened?”, but rather, “Whaaaat!?  Did he just slice through that whole robot!?”

2. ‘Princess Mononoke’:  It is safe to say that most of you have already seen this 1997 Hayao Miyazaki film.  It is the first anime film I have ever seen and still one of the best.  I’m not going to go into the plot of the film.  I will say that if you haven’t seen this, drop what you’re doing and do yourself a favor…rent it, buy it, netflix it, whatever the means because it’s totally worth it.  Miyazaki films have their own type of animation style.  Mostly hand drawn with touches of computer animation, he’s able to reflect a character’s thoughts and emotions so well you can’t help but feel connected to the character and their journey.

1. ‘Mushi Shi’: Finally we end with ‘Mushi Shi’.  A funny named anime that has very self contained type episodes.  Although the story follows one character named Ginko, each episode focuses on the individual journey’s he takes.  Ginko is a Mushi Master who travels mainly to research and aid people on all things Mushi.  Although there is no overall plot line, this series is one of the most beautiful one’s I’ve seen.  There is a mixture of classic animation against an almost watercolor like back ground.  The mellowness of the style makes you want to live in this calm Mushi filled world, and well…you can only hope that you have Ginko on speed dial.

What a great top 5 Birdiebo!  We love your style and I will definitely check these out soon!

MacGruber the Movie

I don't know if anyone has seen the MACGRUBER skit on SNL but if you haven't you should definitely check it out on Youtube.  The one with Betty White is my personal favorite but there are many others that you can surely enjoy! 

MacGruber...it's an awesome action film with lots of ghost sex...MacGruber...WWE universe sends out its gay team, I mean A team...MacGruber...he makes an awesome spanish monk...MacGruber!

Once you know the opening theme of MacGruber you can sing this little diddy in your head for days!
The movie did go a bit slow in certain spots but for the most part it was a silly and a tad naughty but it was everything I expected it to be.
The basic plot of the movie is MacGruber (which if you weren't aware by now is supposed to be a rip off of MacGyver) has gone into retirement and the only thing that can get him to serve his country is the stealing of an F5 nuclear missile by his arch enemy Cunths.  With the help of sidekick Vicki St. Elmo and fresh out of the academy Lt. Piper, MacGruber goes undercover to make sure that Cunths has the feeling pound out of him!
Many more puns and witty banter ensues with the name Cunths and trust me, this is one SNL movie spin off that I think everyone can enjoy!

Twilight can suck it, True Blood is where it's at!

It's that time again! True Blood time! Ever since Buffy has ended, many have tried to replicate the magic that Joss Wheadon created, but none have been able to get that same reaction...until Ms. Charlaine Harris.

She is one of the most adorable southern women and has captured the essence of all things sexy!  June 13th kicks off the third season of True Blood and if the books are any indication, this season should be excellent.  I am worried a little about the direction that they are going to take with the show, mainly because last season with the whole Marianne fiasco, I literally wanted to puke.  However I have seen some photos and I must say I am getting extremely pumped.  Here are some of my favorites:

Barely Hanging On

We are waiting for our flights in Chicago and let me tell you what, it is freakin' hilarious.  I have had one hour of sleep and we are watching Oprah narrate an animal show on the Discovery channel.  I haven't laughed this hard since the Hangover...any who, here are some more bits of fun from our featured artist of the month the Franchize.

More Art and a heart to heart with a Twi-hard

In the past week I have been preparing for the epic moment of going abroad for 10 days in the lovely Tokyo, Japan!  That's right, I didn't stutter, I am headed to Tokyo!  Not only will I be there for one of the most exciting conventions in the history of the planet, the Tokyo International Anime Fair but I will be reporting live from the event and getting paid for it! Oh yeah, that's right...are you jealous?  Well you should be and even if you aren't that is ok because I will be attending the Ghibli Museum, Otome Way and plenty of other attractions such as Tokyo Disney, The Imperial Palace and Electric City!


Now that I have the Tokyo news out of the way as you will notice, this is a lovely piece of art by our featured artist of the month the Franchize!  Aw Yeah, it's Rogue bitches!!


The next bit of news saddens me deeply and I tell you this with a heavy heart, the most unthinkable has happened...I warned everyone, I tried to tell them this would happen, but noooo, no one would listen.  It's just a harmless piece written for teenage girls, let them have their fun...well now look what their fun has wrought upon the world.

To whom this may concern:
This movie was a complete waste and I feel that it offends ALL Twilight Fans around the world, that including myself. For one, it was a COMPLETE remaking of the Wolf Pack from the Twilight Saga: New Moon. It gives the werewolves a bad name and makes them look like some deformed mutation of a rabid dog. I actually started to like werewolves after seeing Jacob Black and all his awesomeness on the big screen at the movies. That was until I saw your crappy remake of what you call to be a "were wolf". I don't see how you live with yourself for making it the way you did. If I made this movie, I would be ashamed to even admit that I owned it. How can a werewolf be killed with a silver bullet? Better yet, have you saw the transformation of the man that is "supposed" to be the wolf? He sits in some chair and his entire body turns in to some mutated freak. If you would watch the transformation of Jacob Black, (Taylor Lautner) he doesn't come close to looking as fake, cheap and or mutated as the wolf man. 

You tell me, who looks to be the better werewolf. Your stupid Wolf Movie didn't even make the top Movie for the charts;
Valentines Day WITH TAYLOR Lautner! Get that this is MY oppinion and I felt I wanted to express it because I saw that your email was on your site. I wanted to let you know this is what i thought of the wolf man that sucks. FREAKIN LAUTNER DID!

Now do you see what happens when you encourage stupidity?  This is the ultimate, most horrible, very bad day.  Why on earth would this girl think that Stephanie Meyers invented the HISTORY OF WEREWOLVES!!!  I wish that this could be forwarded to Mrs. Stephanie Meyers to let her know that she has ripped a hole in the fabric of the universe and that tards every where think she invented werewolves.  Then she should write a public apology to everyone who isn't stupid, mainly all the people who hate her books.

Neil Gaiman...wait whaaa??

Neil Gaiman, the award-winning author of novels, films, and comics including the epoch-changing graphic novel series The Sandman, will take the stage for a benefit appearance on behalf of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund at C2E2. An "Evening with Neil Gaiman", a paid, ticketed event, will take place on Saturday night, April 17 at 7 PM in the Arie Crown Theater at McCormick Place in Chicago, IL. 100% of the proceeds will go to benefit the First Amendment legal work of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund.
 In the last ten years, Mr. Gaiman's published such books as American Gods, Coraline, and The Graveyard Book. He's made movies and operas. He even started keeping a blog. A generation has grown up who have not seen an evening with Neil Gaiman -- until now.
The "Evening with Neil Gaiman" will be Mr. Gaiman's only public appearance at C2E2. The event will begin at 7 PM with doors opening at 6:30. Tickets will be available both to C2E2 badge holders as well as the general public. (Tickets to C2E2 are not necessary to attend the CBLDF's "Evening with Neil Gaiman", however different pricing applies.)

Literature for Ladies: 5 comics necessary for survival by Lady Historian

March begins the convention season and with that I shall be doing a media blast non stop until the season once again draws to a close.  I will be running several pieces that address the confusion one might have being a newb to the comic/anime scene and this article kicks off the series: Newb 101: what to know so you can participate in excellent conversations.  My dear friend Lady Historian, graciously offered her opinion on 5 comic titles that a newb should read before they die and I heartily concur.  Relax and enjoy...let the information wash over you and tuck you in like a comforting blanket...

There may be women who, contrary to popular belief and stereotypes, have followed comics religiously for their entire literate lives. They could argue, passionately, about the relative merits of DC versus Marvel comics and the underappreciated contributions of other publishers such as Vertigo, Dark Horse and other similarly dramatic-sounding companies. This list is not for those women. While I respect them and, in a way, envy them, I do not have the background to discuss the finer points of comic book lore. Rather, with so many friends entrenched in comic book fandom, I decided a few scant years ago to dabble in the wonderful worlds illustrated fiction had to offer.

As a new initiate into the fold, going into a comic book store was startlingly intimidating. I imagine many women who enter the realm of comics feel similarly as they seek common ground with boyfriends, friends, or others with encyclopedic knowledge of comics. To help take the edge off the intimidating height, breadth, and depth of the shelves stacked with monthlies, TPBs, crossovers and God-knows-whats, the following selections are my choices for women who enjoy a good story—regardless of the medium. As a fringe benefit, they all happen to be comics and can bridge that gap of “nerdiness” between yourself and your beau or friend.

Fables (published by Vertigo comics)—Your mother always told you not to believe in fairy tales but what if that world really did exist? In Fables stories we know and love are ‘real’ people, places and events (in what you could equate with DC's 52 Earth's) with an evil overlord, also known as the ‘Adversary’, begins taking over these alternate dimensions the fable characters flee to the "not-worth-taking-over" world we live in. Based in New York City, the story arcs follow various characters as they struggle to exist in the modern era and, eventually, try to free their homelands from oppression. Though it sounds shallow and childlike, it is anything but that. The characters are incredibly endearing and engaging, The plotlines, which have a bit of a Sherlock Holmes feel/knock off, are spectacular. They all have long-reaching consequences for characters and represent a dash of humanity despite the non-human origins of the characters. Minor characters are not simple plot devices, but individuals that the reader is invested in.

If you like fantasy, drama with a splash of reality, read this series. I would especially recommend the storylines of ‘The Good Prince’ and ‘The Keep at World’s End’.

Astro City TPB ‘Confessions’ (published by five million different people but the one you are most likely is Wildstorm)— Out of the many Astro City compilations, Confessions is literally awesome. As in: fills one with some serious awe. All of the Astro City stories are great, but this one is not to be missed.  Although it is your basic ‘mysterious hero with a shady past works to solve a mystery with a teen sidekick’, surpasses the used plots that should come with it. Even though the narrator never particularly engaged me, the payoff at the end of the story was worth slogging through the angst-y, ego-centric Robin clone. The skillful handling of the climax made me cry. Granted, that is not terribly difficult to do, but my tears did not come from some superficial ‘that’s so sad’’ place. Rather, I found my inner voice complaining, “It’s just not fair!” and genuine frustration with the authors boiled in me for the spectacular conclusion of the story.

            If nothing else, the caliber of this series should impress you when I say that the forward to ‘Confession’ is not to be missed. Not even the real comic, but the commentary on it. It is the definition of greatness it takes classic plots and still manages to inspire a consideration of the ‘grander issues of life’ in your mind without being preachy and it manages to do it in a way that doesn’t beat you over the head or try to be confusingly avant-garde.

Booster Gold, especially the TPBs ’52 pick up’ and ‘Blue and Gold’ (published by DC comics)— I have to warn you that you might need a little back story for this one. It’s useful to know about the history of Justice League: International (which is great if you’re in the mood for dry, sarcastic wit) before diving in. Otherwise, you run the risk of  the greatest moment of the Booster Gold series falling flat. I imagine reading the 52 series would help fill in some blanks, since this is a 52 pick up, but I didn’t and suffered no ill consequences that I know of. In a super-girly way, I will admit that the biggest draw of this comic comes from its focus on the relationship between Booster Gold and the second Blue Beetle, Ted Kord. Not a yaoi thing weirdos, a friendship, strictly platonic. 

In this series, Booster has become a bona-fide hero, cleverly disguised as a goofy, attention-hogging "hero". As payment for his thankless work, he demands that he be able to save the life of his dearest friend, Ted Kord, from the villainy of Max Lord. This quest sets up a series of events that show the reader the best of humanity. It remind us of what really matters in a time when pessimism and egocentricity rule and many people believe that love is something that can only exist between romantically involved partners. Booster Gold proves that there is a place for compassion, devotion, and loyalty (all characteristics of love) among friends. It’s a book that makes you feel like there is hope for humanity—bet you never thought you’d think that about Booster Gold!

Will Eisner’s The Spirit (by Darwyn Cooke) Book Two (published by DC)—I really like Darwyn Cooke’s work. I’m not going to lie. To that end, don’t let the reboot of the ‘The Spirit’ in movie form deceive you. It was a travesty unto mankind. This detective comic, by the incredibly talented Cooke, is the way a re-imagining should be. Updated, but not…stupid.  That is not to say that Spirit doesn’t have its goofy moments. That is part of its charm. It's not a serious drama and retains that sarcasm and chauvinistic wit that made the original work as long as you had a sense of humor. Between the shallow commentary,this story has nuggets of social commentary embedded for those with the mental wherewithal to see it. It also has characters that are forces of good without losing or being consumed by their insecurities. It has a female character who is often abused as a sex object in various incarnations (even in this version at times with visiting writers and/or artists), but who proves eventually to be everything a woman can realistically hope to become in personality and character. It manages to take a character originally portrayed as racially typecast comic relief and makes him relevant, charming, and realistic.

 Blue Beetle (published by DC)— In terms of a reboot series this one is probably the best, with the added fringe benefit of giving you just enough information about the previous incarnations of the Blue Beetle to make you look smart. It manages to make a cliched character, your average high school student bestowed with magnificent powers, actually interesting. The trials that the new Blue Beetle, Jaime Reyes, endures are approached with a simplicity that is charming without being naive.

            The eternal conflict of ‘absolute power corrupts absolutely’ is the center of the Blue Beetle story. If you’ve ever read a heroic story of someone in extraordinary circumstances (e.g. people who actively risked their lives to work against Hitler’s diabolical plans from within the Third Reich) and wondered if you would react similarly or if you would roll over complacently, this is the book for you. As with so many other great stories, the newest Blue Beetle faces challenges from super-powered villains that provoke thoughts about our own internal weaknesses and motivations. Oh, and it’ll make you laugh. That’s always a bonus.

That concludes my top five must read list and I hope this helps guide you on your journey to finding great comics.  Now I am off to discover new treasures for my mind!

Alice in Wonderland: Stabbing one eye at a Time

I had the immense pleasure of screening the new Alice in Wonderland 3D!  I did have my doubts at first and I know I am going to get back lash from this but there is really only one thing that Tim Burton has done that I absolutely loved which was Nightmare Before Christmas.  He is a visionary for the macabre but when it comes to something that is widely perceived by the general public as a once cartoon film ( I know it was a book, I am not a retard Twilight fan who thinks Stephanie Meyer invented the history of werewolves) one tends to get a little worried.  So I settled in with a bag of Funyuns and gummi bears and was ready for anything.

What I was not ready for was the amount of eyeball stabbing/removal and other violent acts that I should have expected, it is Tim Burton after all, but I never would have imagined the dormouse climbing on top of Alice's attacker and stabbing it's eye with his sword and pulling it out of it's socket.  (Later keeping the eye as a trophy around his belt)  Later on in the movie I also had to witness the Mad Hatter doing the exact same thing to the Knave of Hearts and other no name characters.    Now while this was bad ass, it was not at all what I would call a typical family friendly Disney movie.  I wouldn't take a child under the age of 10 that's for sure.  I have been working in a theater long enough to know that these kids will get scared and want to leave before you get to the main plot of the movie.  3D movies are not cheap and if you think your kid can handle it and they are younger I would recommend trying to see the regular 2D version.

The colors and imagery in the movie are very intriguing and as usual Tim Burton has yet to disappoint in this regard.  Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter are the principles in the cast but there are many others who lend their voices, Alan Rickman (Love Actually/Galaxy Quest/Dogma), Christopher Lee (Lord of the Rings/Sleepy Hollow/Gremlins 2), Timothy Spall (Enchanted/Sweeny Todd/Harry Potter), and Stephen Fry (Bones/V for Vendetta/Spice World) to list a few.

I loved the March Hare, he had to have been my absolute favorite, mainly because it reminded me of every A.D.D. person I have ever met (yes this also includes myself) and it was just well done.  The White Queen who was played by Anne Hathaway was also very amusing and I could tell there was a lot of effort put into her being quite adorable and bubbly all the time.  With the White Queen there is a special moment when she "breaks character" that allowed us to relate to her and gave us something that was more human.

The Red Queen was a delight and to quote another movie that I saw recently "life is glorious for the cursed and the damned."  Even when she has no one to support her it's "OFF WITH HER HEAD"  

The movie is charming and alluring and every thing you would expect from Tim Burton.  Some were expecting a bit more creepiness from the king of deranged but it is a Disney film people and I think it is creepy enough for this "family friendly" film.  I recommend this movie to all who have an open mind and don't expect it to be like the books or the former movies.  Watch as if you have never even heard of the franchise and I guarantee this will be an utter delight!

March already?!

Oi! It's already March and as usual I am always slow on the uptake.  I am still deciding on my new artist of the month so I will give you some art work from another one of my favorite artists that are attending C2E2...

Franco Aureliani and Art Baltazar!  They are 2 amazing artists that are responsible for the hit sensation Tiny Titans!  These fellas are generating a lot of interest in comics for the kids who are new to the whole scene.  They also give me a lot of joy to read the new hijinks of the Tiny Titans team and I can't get enough!  When you go to a convention and they are there, they spend all there time doing sketches for fans at a ridiculous rate (ridiculous as in OMG I don't know why they aren't charging more) and they do amazing work!


They also do other works besides Tiny Titans but I feel as if they really need to be given props for revolutionizing the industry.  *Snaps for Tiny Titans* *Snaps for Franco and Art*  We love them and that is why they are the featured artist!  Check them out at C2E2!

Wow! Amanda Conner

I posted my volunteer application video on the c2e2 site and I think I can link it here but we will see how this technological challenged lady will handle the situation!  


As promised, new art work from some of the talented artists attending C2E2 as featured guests!  Amanda Conner is one of the talented attendee's and in our house hold we can't get enough!  Whether it's Terra, Birds of Prey or Power Girl, she is definitely one hot comic artist!

Also if you have been hiding under a rock or simply hadn't entertained the idea of collecting busts, Amanda Conners has done Women of the DC Universe Series 3(the first series was by Adam Hughes and the second series was by Terry Dodson).  These collectibles are pretty sweet and will be finding themselves on my shelves very soon!
